Al Haverkamp’s practice focuses on insurance coverage disputes, construction claims, and business litigation. He acts as insurance coverage counsel for the San Diego County Schools Joint Powers Authority and outside general counsel for several developers, contractors, and businesses. An area of particular focus is representing public entities in disputes with their Excess Workers’ Compensation Reimbursement Insurers. Highlights of Al’s recoveries from Excess WC carriers include the following settlements of US District Court bad faith lawsuits: $3.3M for the City of Manhattan Beach; $2.7M for the San Diego Unified School District; $1.3M for the City of Escondido; and $775,000 for Long Beach Transit. Al has also recovered over $2M on multiple claims for the San Diego County Schools Joint Powers Authority and the California Self-insurer’s Security Fund. Al has recovered over $30 million for institutional clients in insurance coverage disputes.
Mr. Haverkamp also represents developers, homebuilders, general contractors, and subcontractors in construction litigation involving insurance, indemnity, breach of contract, delay, and disruption claims. Al has extensive experience litigating coverage issues involving OCIPS and Wraps, CGL policies, business interruption coverage, property insurance, and builders’ risk insurance. Past litigation experience includes winning a $13 million punitive damage award for the Fresno Unified School District. This award was upheld on appeal.
Mr. Haverkamp was formerly on the Board of Directors of the San Diego Chapter of Risk and Insurance Management Society (“RIMS”), and is the author of the RIMS coverage quiz. Mr. Haverkamp has presented to the National Council of Self-Insurers’, PARMA, National RIMS, the California Self-Insurer’s Association and several Third-Party Administrators.
